Indicator
A concept in strategic foresight and anticipatory governance
Evidence a board agrees to watch after it decides. A good indicator carries a return trigger: a point at which the board will revisit the decision.
Background
Scenario planners sometimes call indicators signposts. They are chosen in advance so that a group can tell which future is beginning to unfold. Tying an indicator to a return trigger turns a one-time decision into one that is checked over time.
A question it raises
What would tell us we were wrong, and when would we look again?
