What if a job is no longer the basic unit of economic life?

The single-job career is weakening. Younger workers are increasingly building “portfolio careers,” combining employment with freelance work, side businesses and other sources of income. A 2026 study found Gen Z workers were significantly more interested than older workers in using multiple jobs to maintain different professional identities and build diverse networks.

So what?
Community colleges have organized workforce education around occupations. Choose a field, complete a program, enter the workforce. But that model assumes that a job is the basic unit of economic life. What if it isn't? A student might simultaneously be an employee, freelancer, small business owner, caregiver, and sometime contractor, with income and identity spread across several kinds of work. Preparing someone for that life is different from preparing someone for a job. It requires not only occupational skill, but the ability to assemble work, move between roles, manage uncertainty, and decide which opportunities are worth pursuing. The question may become less “What do you want to be?” and more “How do you want to build a life that works?”
